Why start your legal career in Texas? What’s different maybe from other firms, legal aids?

In a word: Possibility. You will get more here than anywhere else.

You will get the best experience, where you are needed the most.

  • Your work will impact lives on the Texas-Mexico border – the most vulnerable among us, often refugees, recent immigrants from all over the world.

  • Many speak Spanish -- don’t know Spanish? No problem. Some is all you need to get started and show clients the respect they deserve. We’ll help with the rest.

Name your area of focus.

  • We have 45 practice areas now. Name one we missed, and we will add it.

Start your career doing impact work or individual service cases or both.

  • We push it in all forums - state, federal, Human Rights Commission…we go everywhere.

  • Unlimited litigation budget for experts and depos. If you aren’t taking depos in a hotly contested case, we want to know why. (Ok, we have a litigation budget for the program overall, but we have yet to exceed it.)

  • Here’s a listing of just some of our cases (you’ll have to login) that made Westlaw to give you a flavor of our advocacy.

Work alongside experienced lawyers.

  • We are one of the largest programs in the country. You will have in-house access to nationally renowned legal experts who are waiting to hear from newbies who are ready to push the limits with them.

  • We have almost 200 attorneys on staff currently repping 52 law schools, including all ten of the Texas law schools, as well as Michigan, Harvard, Yale, Northeastern, Fordham, Emory, Minnesota, Berkeley, GW, NYU, Florida, CUNY, Columbia, Virginia, Boston U, Stanford, among many others.

It’s a life-changing commitment – but not a lifelong assignment.

  • Here, you aren’t just practicing law. You’re shaping the legal landscape and continuing the TRLA tradition of pushing it for the client community in areas where there aren’t 50 nonprofits, shelters, and sympathetic communists nearby – we are the outpost in these communities, often the only entity stopping evictions, deportation, violence against family members, fraud, corruption, injustice.

  • This is about building sustainable, long-term solutions to systemic legal challenges in communities that face systemic inequity and legal disparity.

The border between the Gulf of Mexico and El Paso stretches over 1200 miles.

  • Pick one of our 10 offices along the border to start. Grab another 3L to come with you we’ll office y’all together.

  • Coming back home? We love to see it. There is nothing like being able to give back to your home community. Attorneys who have that connection are able to forge deeper connections with our clients, understand community nuances, and develop legal strategies specifically tailored to the needs and realities of border and rural communities.

  • Not from around here? We look forward to welcoming you to Texas. Immerse yourself in the blend of Texan and Mexican cultures, shape your perspective beyond the courtroom, and get great food while you’re at it.

Besides human fulfillment and professional development, what do we offer?

  • Salary for newly licensed attorneys: $61,000, PLUS:

    • 100% of IDR (loan repayment assistance)

    • bar application fee and bar prep course

    • healthcare, dental, and retirement plans

    • pay and benefits starting July 1 without expectation of reporting to the office until after the bar exam

    • Texas is a UBE state: 270 min score (only Pennsylvania is higher at 272, so getting licensed in Texas means you can take your score pretty much anywhere).

If we feel like you are a good fit, we will flY (OR DRIVE) you to THE BORDER for a tour of our offices. No obligation. Seeing is believing.
